No Money Fringe Weekend

No Money Fringe Weekend

Cultural binge with no bucks.

Perth’s pulsing with performance, art and people (so many people!) right now, with annual independent arts event Fringe World in full swing. The festival have turned up the heat with a mammoth 2015 programme; with over 500 events going down – you can peruse them, and buy tickets, HERE. If you’re a struggling creative with no money to splash out on other struggling creatives, we’ve found some free Fringe picks that look pretty fun! (Image: Nina Zivkovic).

MOB THE JOINT

If you love surprises and eating bucket loads of food then this is the event for you, Fringe Fast Food Flash Mobs. The aim is to get a large group of people to descend on a fast food outlet at one time and eat a specific ingredient till it runs out but you won’t know where till the last moment!

Register here for times and locations.

WINE YOURSELF

If a fruity white or a full-bodied red are you friends of choice at night then the official sponsor of Fringe World 2015 Howling Wolves Margaret River have got a treat for you. Throughout the entire festival they’re offering free tasting of all their wines. Lets just repeat that, free.

Monday 26 Jan - Sunday 15 Feb, 4pm till late, Pleasure Gardens.

 WORD UP

We always say “I don’t have time to read” but really it’s just because, you know – iPhone. Turn off your best friend for a half hour and head down to the Pleasure Gardens at Fringe - Curtin Univerity has gone and set up a nice al-fresco library under the trees, where you can borrow a book, turn off your phone (you can do it!) and remind yourself what non-Internet life feels like. If you’ve got some books at home you wouldn’t mind getting rid of, bring ‘em down and build the library – at the end they’ll all be donated to charity.

Runs until Sunday February 22. Curtin Garden Library at the Pleasure Garden.

RICKSHAWS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Chances are that if you’ve been Asia you have taken a death-defying but exhilarating ride on a Rickshaw. But you’re Rickshaw definitely didn’t have Wi-Fi. Well Fringe World have them for the nights of the festival to take you through Northbridge as you leap and hop from one event to another.

Runs until Sat 21 Feb, every Friday and Saturday, 6pm. Departs from The Pleasure Garden.

 SCRATCH YOUR WAY TO VICTORY

Throughout the festival Fringe World are offering you the chance to win big if you buy a scratchie, any scratchie and present your stump to the Scratchie’N’Win Great Big Scratchie in The Pleasure Garden. Admittedly this isn’t free but with your potential max spend of a dollar you’re chances of doing better than a dollar are quite high.

Runs until Sat 20 Feb, every Thursday to Saturday, 6-10pm, The Pleasure Garden.

BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT

None of us have the luxury of time so if you’re pushed for it or lack an attention span then the 60 second Fringe with it’s bite-sized show lengths will be perfect for you. But be warned as just about anything could happen…

Every Thursday, 6pm till late, Brookfield Place.

 DECLARE YOUR LOVE

Sharron - who goes by the moniker ‘the Elvis Presley of Perth’ is holding ceremonies for couples to public pronounce their love for each other. *heart melts* It sounds all a bit like getting married minus the in-laws, remembering to invite that 6th cousin, the hopeless speeches and potentially awful food so on the whole it actually sounds quite good. Ceremonies will be held every Thursday-Saturday from 8:30pm starting on Friday 23 January to Saturday 21 February. However the first week will see ceremonies held between Friday 23 January to Sunday 25 January instead.

Runs until Sat 21 Feb, from Thursday – Saturday, 8:30pm, The Pleasure Garden. To book go to www.getshazzied.com

DANCING IN THE DARK

If you’ve never been to a No Lights No Lycra; it’s definitely something you have to try once in your life. It’s dancing in a room with people, but without alcohol – before you freak out and say ‘that’s impossible, I can only dance after a few’, know that it’s also in total pitch black, so nobody can see what crazy moves you’re pulling. After the first few songs, you start to totally lose your inhibitions. It’s cool.

The WA Spiegeltent, The Pleasure Garden, James Street, Northbridge. Sessions TBC, keep your eye on Fringe World’s Facebook.
