Welcome to the beguiling future-R&B world of Melbourne's Attila Mora

He has a captivating new single out called Out My Life, plus a mix to set the mood.

Attila Mora is a Melbourne-based singer/songwriter/producer who has just released a quite stunning new single, Out My Life. It follows on from previous single I Want You Back, and it's an engrossing mix of soulful, stripped-back electronica and R&B, held together by his haunting vocal work. It's one of the most unique tracks we've heard from Australia's exciting current crop of emerging acts, and we were compelled to send him a few questions to find out more.

You can have a listen and check his answers out below, where you'll also find a beautiful, mood-setting mix he created to celebrate the release of Out My Life.

Tell us about about yourself?

I’m a songwriter turned bedroom producer. My parents were born in Communist Hungary hence the name. But I was born and raised in Melbourne (yes it's better than Sydney). I’ve been making music since I can remember. My obsession is music, but outside of that I love philosophy and I am considered a midnight Googler. I Google anything and everything, some people get stuck in the rabbit hole of YouTube, for me its Wikipedia.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

The music is a little on the moody/melancholy side. It’s my expression of weird and wonderful sounds I record in my room, piano samples that I completely destroy and rebuild or my own clicks and pops, combined with tinkering of synths. For me it’s all about surprising the listener with music and getting them to connect emotionally with the lyrics.

Production/writing process:

My song writing usually starts on a slightly out of tune old piano in my family home. It’s here that a lay down the heart of the song, the chords. Then the lyrics hopefully just flow off my tongue or if they don’t I just sit there adlibbing and riffing. Either way I take what create on the piano and then turn it into something completely different upstairs in my bedroom. I have to split the process, part one the emotional songwriter and then part two technical producer.

Can you tell us about your new single, Out My Life, and the mixtape that it comes with?

Out My Life is a song I wrote to help me let go of someone that I knew was holding me back. It was a production experiment where I pushed the boundaries, whilst making the song a journey. Imploring the to listener to do the same; drop that one person in your life who is holding you back.

I made this mixtape with all my favourite songs from Australian artists from the past three months. And then combined them with my favourite tracks from International artists over the past year or two. It will take you across many genres and bounce around but it's mainly electronic music. A few people have told me it’s a great inconspicuous bedroom playlist for those still living with their parents or uptight housemates.

Any shows coming up?

My next show is on the 12th of May at Penny Black supporting Evengaline.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I have been collaborating with a few artists so I am looking forward to those releases plus a few of my own. I am going to Hungary to visit some family and maybe try sneak in a few gigs over there.

Where can we hear more of your music?

Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud.
