Premiere: ROMÆO - Less I Do

Naarm/Melbourne-based producer & vocalist returns with new single of two-step influenced sounds ahead of November EP

After dropping an EP and standalone single last year, singer-songwriter & producer ROMÆO is back with her first new music of the year, the ethereal sounds of the melancholic pop meets UK Garage that is Less I Do, premiering on Pilerats a day ahead of release.

Opening with lofi UKG drums and distorted synths, Less I Do soon gives way to lush pads and ROMÆO’s silvery, honeyed vocals detail wistful recollections and thoughts, with the track building up to an unexpected breakdown before looping back to a restrained conclusion, leaving you wanting more.

ROMÆO elaborates “I wrote Less I Do about a year after I developed my chronic pain condition. I needed to write about my relationship with my body and health, but I really struggled with how to broach the topic. It felt like anything I wrote reduced the experience and didn’t capture the totality of it. This song was a way for me to process my own mindset and check in with myself. I was doing everything to try and figure out my issue and solve it, and at the same time I felt I wasn’t progressing at all. My life became filtered through a blue light of uncertainty and discontent. I wanted to capture that feeling in the production and vocal performance.”

Less I Do comes ahead of her new EP SONGS ABOUT ME (out November 10), that follows up 2022’s BEAUTY EP which earned her a nomination at the 2022 FBi SMAC Awards for Next Big Thing. ROMÆO’s music has also seen airtime on triple j and community radio around the country.
