Premiere: Matilda Pearl continues her pop streak with new single, Linger

The electrifying new single comes alongside a number of announcements from the musician, including a label deal and tour dates.

If you didn't have Matilda Pearl on your ones-to-watch list at the turn of 2021, you'll probably end up putting her own there by the end of this week. The Victorian 18-year-old made a debut with two electrifying pop tracks last year, with Soak and Your Touch building from influences spread from Kylie to Jamiroquai to create this distinct, dance-y brand of pop music that felt forward-thinking yet nostalgic for the past all in one shot. She calls it a 'mermaid meets disco ball' world, to get an idea of where she's coming from, and to be honest, it's the perfect identifier - her music feeling near-angelic and otherworldly, but held down by catchy dance rhythms that keeps everything in check.

Today, we're stoked to premiere her third single, with Linger being a track that makes it three from three for the Mornington Peninsula-based artist. Premiering ahead of its full release tomorrow, March 7th, Linger captures the strengths of Matilda Pearl's work as it hits another new peak; a swirling disco production - think classic bass guitar rhythms meets dancing 80s-esque synth work - underlying her sugary vocals, which even when they sound bright and joyful, carry some personal and intimate themes that Matilda aims explores through her work.

"Linger is about knowing something is bad for you, but hanging around anyway which I did in the last few years of high school," she says on the single. "It's about the feeling between clinging onto something awesome that was once there, but also realising it's long gone. I wrote it during year 12 partly to distract myself from online study, but also with the intention to get myself up and dancing to the bad times rather than feeling sad over them. I hope people listen and get that same feeling that it's better to dance like no one is watching when stuff gets hard."

The single's release comes with some big wins for Matilda Pearl, who as mentioned, is making some serious moves to cement her name amongst the next generation of Australian pop music. For starters, Linger arrives as a part of a newly-minted label deal with Sweat It Out, and on top of that, she's signed with heavy-hitters UNIFIED for management and Lonely Lands Agency for touring; a pairing that represents some of the country's golden acts in both today and tomorrow's worlds.

There's also a couple of tour dates coming up too, which will give you a chance to catch Matilda Pearl in-action on the live stage - something we highly recommend. She's launching Linger with a show at the Northcote Social Club on July 23rd, and following that, she's got a slot at the Land of Plenty Festival in Victoria on October 30th.

We're sure there's plenty more to come both in recording and on the live stage, but for now, take a listen to Linger below, as it premieres on Pilerats today:
