2017 has seen a number of exciting Australian independent musicians break-out – particularly in the pop world – where artists including Kota Banks, Haiku Hands and others have adapted the bouncy, radio-friendly sounds picked up by commercial radio and twisted them into their own unique flavours. Aeora is another of these names (albeit a little less club-ready), with her two singles of 2017 thus far – March's Boss-y and July's Fenceline – seeing the Melbourne musician explore a more brooding and robust taste of Australian pop, sort-of reminiscent of BANKS in the States. Her new track Need You follows suit, showcasing Aeora's bold and howling vocals above a contrastingly dark and restrained production, produced by Kult Kyss' Haxx. The single – co-written by the now Sydney-located LANKS – is one those tracks which despite feeling quite bold and dense in its production, teases this really raw and intimate side of Aeora, something which may also come from the single's lyrics and meaning.

"[Need You is about] reflecting on a relationship – the doubts, the love and the pain," Aeora explains. "It’s about reflecting upon my own idea of being independent and still needing someone else, and telling myself that it’s okay." The combination of the empowering message and Aeora's uplifting vocals perfectly work together on Need You, something which LANKS agrees with in a statement provided with the single's release. "Her voice is so emotional and evocative, and as the song developed her voice continues to be such a powerful anchoring point that the rest of the production so perfectly sits around," he says. Listen to the single below, and keep an eye on Aeora as she continues to soar through her break-out 2017 and into an extremely promising year ahead.
