In a massive online poll, Daft Punk have been crowned with the decade's best dance album
Porter Robinson's Worlds, Flume's self-titled, Jamie XX's In Colour and Jon Hopkins' Immunity got real close.
Just the other week, we shared the news that a mammoth poll was going down over on Reddit's electronicmusic subreddit, aiming to collect votes from the group's near-two-million-strong member base to crown the decade's best dance record. Two weeks ago, the vote was narrowed down to a top 100; a collection of albums that according to the subreddit, captured the last ten years of dance / electronic music and its many movements, from the waves of EDM and dubstep right through to now-heavyweights capable of headlining festivals, such as our own Flume.
However, there were also some glaring omissions, as voiced by everyone in the comments. Bar Flume's discography and a RÜFÜS DU SOL album or two, Australian dance music was largely left out of the equation, excluding musicians like The Presets and PNAU to have their chance. Robyn - who defined a generation of dance-pop still ongoing - was absent, as were musicians in similar boats such as The Naked and Famous and Charli XCX; not dance musicians per se, but with sounds firmly rooted in dance culture.
Now, the votes have been cast, and people have decided that none other than Daft Punk's Random Access Memories is the best dance record of the last ten years. Daft Punk's last record won out by a mere 60 votes, with Porter Robinson's Worlds, Flume's self-titled debut record, Jamie xx's In Colour, and Jon Hopkins' Immunity coming in close behind. Disclosure, Bonobo, Mat Zo, ODESZA and Tycho make the rest of the top ten, while the remaining top 20 includes two Flume records back-to-back, alongside additions by Bicep and Nero.
Random Access Memories - while definitely a great record - is an interesting top pick. The album was torn to shreds on release, unable to live up to the unmanageable expectations of a Daft Punk return. Many branded it one of the duo's worst albums, and as much as Porter Robinson and Flume have gone on to define entire dance music movements, Random Access Memories' legacy on dance music is a bit unsure outside of it being a bonafide great album.
Though if the choice gets people listening to Instant Crush or Giorgio by Moroder again, we're not too mad.
