Jocelyn’s Baby (formally known as Jess Jocelyn) caught our attention last year with the release of their debut EP Foetus & Fossil, which showcased an effortless knack for striking songwriting commenting on some of the bigger issues facing the world, set to beautiful indie-pop-folk sounds. Today they’re back with a double single release ARE YOU LISTENING? and DID IT HURT YOU? the first tastes of a full-length LP in the pipeline.

Inspired by the likes of Mitski and Phoebe Bridges, Jocelyn's Baby has evolved into a 4-piece iteration with Courtney hardy on drums, Aaron Graham on bass, and Joshua Rospondek on guitar, with singer-songwriter and theater maker Jess Nyanda Moyle at the helm. No stranger to writing narratives of Australian identity, addiction, existential crisis’ and healing (as we saw in Foetus & Fossil) the new double release see’s Jess as a songwriter further bare her soul and question as an artist “Is there anyone out there that actually cares about what I do?”, replying with a dead-pan expression “Haha, no!”.

ARE YOU LISTENING? is a brooding ballad led by the warm reverb-drenched pitter patters of keys, setting a melancholic tone for layers of vocals to sweep you up in their self-doubt with lyrics such as “someone tell me while I do all this?”. Whilst overall thematically tragic, glimmers of hope shine through as Jess’ euphoric voice hopes that “maybe someone out there is listening”. Picking up the pace with DID IT HURT YOU? with the addition of melodic guitar lead lines and a fun steady beat, Jess shows her sarcastic and witty side with cleaver and honest lyricism that dance around the idea of an expiration date for artists of a certain age, inspired by the infamous triple j tweet from last year… (as explained in this TikTok).
