Watch: Tuka - My Star

Watch: Tuka - My Star

Move over, Matthew McConaughey, and make way for this rap-stronaut!

If you'd asked me what I thought would be the visual direction for Australian rapper / singer / producer Tuka's next official video, never in a million (light) years would I have said "probably a video set in outer space". But here we are, watching Interstellar - done Tuka-style!

My Star, which is a single taken off Tuka's latest hit album Life Death Time Eternal (and we can say that, because it charted in the ARIA Top Ten!) has received a pretty sublime video treatment (from directors Harry Hunter and Mike Williamson), that more than meets the bar Tuka set for himself visually with his last clip for Tattoo (read about that one here). In a non-direct way, the clip actually continues the tone of melancholic isolation established by Tattoo, as Tuka plays the role of an astronaut (his real-life childhood dream job!) manning his own solo mission, his only contact with life via some transmitted broadcasts of loved ones before he plunges into another planet (or star's?) atmosphere.

The 'blockbuster movie' vibe is a nice fit for the song's sweeping pop chorus, whose lyrics have a catchy timelessness to them (when I wish upon a star / I wonder who you are / I wonder who you are). They're brought to the fore by Tuka's strong singing voice, laid atop a warm electric guitar line - all of which works in good contrast with the directness of the rapped verses. The space-time travel vibes are strong with this one - Tuka says the track is "a song to my own future child - the line 'you are my star' comes from the point of view that essentially we’re all made of matter that originally came from star dust."

Watch it below. Tuka's tour kicks off in October - check below to see when he's headed your way. Read our interview with Tuka here.
