Introducing And Beyond, and exciting Perth rap duo carving a serious name for themselves

Their latest single Friends is under two minutes long, but jammed full of fire.

And Beyond are a Perth-based rap duo consisting of rapper Insane The Prince and producer ZYTGYST who've been slinging us the odd beat here and there for a minute. We've been quietly paying attention, waiting to see how it develops, and turns out their new single Friends is the one that got us. It barely cracks the one-minute-thirty mark, but it packs a punch in its short-and-sweet stay. The hook is catchy af, the bars come real fkn fast with a pretty irresistible flow, and the production is on point.

Their entire vibe definitely feels super unique in the WA hip hop scene, and we reckon it's only a matter of time before the rest of the country sits up to take notice as well.

Tell us about yourselves?

Insane The Prince: We’re just two brothers from Perth, trying to build our own scene. We’ve never really felt like we fit in with the pre-established Aus music crowd, so we’re just doing us and hoping people fw +B. I started writing music when I was 18, just as poetry - I was in quite a dark place at the time and it just kinda evolved into music. I was writing at the same time my brother was learning how to make beats, and naturally we decided to collaborate.

ZYTGYST: I started producing instrumentals when I was about 19. When I was younger I used to muck around with GarageBand, making little beats. Back then it was just for some fun, I had no idea this would be such a huge part of my life today.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

ITP: Sometimes we make stuff that sounds real hard, other times we make chill stuff you can catch a vibe on. It just depends on how I’m feeling and what sort of beats Z is cookin’ up.

ZYTGYST: I can’t think of anyone we really sound like to give you an idea, which is good I guess. You’ll just have to listen?!?!

Production/writing process:

ZYTGYST: For this track I started by looking back into what inspired me when I first started making music. I used to listen to quite a lot of Odd Future, which influenced me to create a kind of eerie sound throughout the song. I also wanted to include a heavily distorted 808 to keep the energy flowing.

ITP: I really just wanted to write a song addressing some of the emotions and issues in my life. My main focus was to write a song where my cadence and flow pushed through, whilst making it a fun song you can dance to.

Can you tell us about your new single, Friends?

ITP: It's essentially about standing alone with my brother (ZYTGYST) in our social, personal and music lives. “Friends” being the need of more support in the up and coming West Australian hip hop scene.

ZYTGYST: The underlying theme we wanted to capture with this video was to be ‘alone’. We did this by showing ITP participating in activities you would usually do with a group or a friend. The other scenes is just us two, together.

The video was directed by Sara Terry and Edited by ZYTGYST.
