Premiere: Say hello to Solo Dan, and his debut single, So Hey

We've shared the production prowess of Solo Dan on Pilerats plenty of times in the past, although those times were as Perth-based electro-pop duo Grrl Pal. 2017 finds Dan squirreled away in the studio working on some solo productions under the apt moniker of Solo Dan. His first release, So Hey, finds him gliding somewhere around the pop mark, with a hint of Kaytranada (albeit a very summery version), and we're stoked to premiere it today. We also sent him a few questions to help ourselves (and you, fair reader), get in at the ground level with a very talented young dude.

Tell us about about yourself?

I'm Solo Dan, a songwriter/producer from South Fremantle, WA.

What kinda music are we talking?

The kind of music you dance to, my deep love for pop music always shines through. 90s and early 2000s pop plays a central role in all the music I make.

Production/writing process:

I’m always creating and developing ideas. I normally make a bunch, then I sift through them until I find the select few which standout. Then the developing process begins. I'm always eager to use real instrumentation with swung programmed drums or real drums with programmed instrumentation. I eventually lose sight of this and creating a great song becomes my sole objective! This is typically the stage where vocalists and other people get involved! Then finally, the mixing and mastering. I reckon 98% of tracks never get to this stage because my filtering of ideas is aggressive and I need particular approval. The process is by far my favourite part.

Can you tell us about your new single, So Hey?

The song is an introduction to my new project Solo Dan. The song is about the initial feelings of a mutual crush but then it all goes wrong and for some reason it doesn’t seem as though the crush is mutual anymore.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I'm planning on releasing lots of music! I just enjoy making content. I'm developing a bit of a live show as well, but mainly plans on lots of DJ gigs! I love making music, I just want to do that more and more.
