Premiere: Montgomery dissects the complexities of love on new single, With You

Following on from the release of Sure back in October last year, the returning Gold Coast musician continues to soar.

One of our favourite musicians from back in the day was Gold Coast-based artist Montgomery, who you may remember as someone that back in 2014, was blossoming into quite a promising force, attached with all the labels you'd expect: "next big thing", "one to watch" and so on. A big part of that was thanks to her break-out single Pinata - an old favourite in swirling dark-pop in a time when artists like Sky Ferreira and Florence and the Machine were pushing it into the limelight - and the debut EP it featured on New Clear War; both of which being releases that seemingly set Montgomery up to become something incredibly special.

Then, she went quiet. In the five/six years since New Clear War, she's only popped up once: a surprise feature on The Kite String Tangle's career-encapsulating debut album in 2017 being the only glimpse of her remarkable songwriting and vocal beauty that we've seen since, albeit one that doesn't even have Montgomery in the spotlight. Later, back in October last year, came Sure - a single that revived the project in all its glory after a long time of slumber, bidding the return of a championing local pop force in a time when Australian pop music feels as strong and empowered as ever. "Sorry for my 5 year slumber," she said with its release. "It’s good to be back."

Now, it appears that she's not slowing down. Ahead of its official release tomorrow, we're absolutely stoked to premiere the next piece of Montgomery's musical puzzle today in With You, a glittery return that emphasises the hand-gripping euphoria of Montgomery's music at its most powerful and maximalist, capturing the energy of an artist who, despite missing from the forefront of pop music for almost half a decade, didn't feel too far away thanks to her imprint on the next generation.

On a surface level, With You is a loved-up pop epic from Montgomery that almost feels like the closing credits of a teenage romance; a sense of euphoric release and passion shining through its hazy, shimmering melodies and twinkling synth that this time around, give the track an electronic/shoegaze blend (it should be no surprise that the single was worked on alongside Japanese Wallpaper and close collaborator Hamish Patrick).

Deep down, however, With You explores the often-disheartening reality of love; the complexities and strangeness of one of life's most beautiful things disguised through its happiness and joy. "There’s a lot of anxiety and insecurity that follows me into a new relationship. I needed to write about that while keeping it just a hopeful love song on the surface," she says on the single, before diving into its creation. "There are so many layers of sound to it. It’s not as minimal compared to what I’ve released in the past. I built the foundation of production for this on hardware synths and pedals then took it to Gab and Hamish who did the same to create this choir of droning pads."

Dive into the track ahead of its release tomorrow - it's a real beauty - and join us in hoping that Montgomery isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
