Premiere: Meet Sarah Wolfe, who makes an introduction with Devil U Know
The Sydney musician promises emotive dance-pop, and her debut single is the perfect example of this.
Australia's flourishing pop world deepens seemingly every week, with new stars-in-the-making rising from the internet depths on an almost-daily basis, proving that Australia's pop scene is amongst the world's most consistently incredible; rivalling the US and UK mega-markets not quite in celebrity stardom, but definitely talent. Sarah Wolfe is just another example of this upcoming new wave of pop music, with Devil U Know - her debut single - introducing us to an artist whose emotive pop sound feels like a step - if not a leap - into the future, building off years of analysing pop mannerisms and virality and applying it to a musical venture which is bound to prove successful.
While she says that much of her pop interest is in that down-tempo dance-pop you'd expect from names like Robyn, Devil U Know is something brighter and captivating. Above a synth-driven production that sits at bay thanks to the intricacy of production heavyweight Xavier Dunn, Sarah Wolfe proves that pop music is her thing; her vocals strikingly spectacular as they relaxed production allows room for her to move and showcase why she's an artist to watch going into the second half of 2019. "Devil U Know revolves around the intricacies and vulnerabilities that surface during the first few weeks of falling for someone new," she says on the single and you can feel that soft romanticism - and the accompanying vulnerability - in the way her vocal hovers. "It’s based off the quote 'better the devil you know than the devil you don’t,' which in the track represents how love and relationships are terrifying, but shutting yourself off because you’ve been hurt in the past isn’t the best option either. You’d rather the devil you know."
The track doesn't officially arrive until this Friday, but take a gaze into the future with a Pilerats premiere this morning, and better introduce yourself to the artist-on-the-rise while you're at it below:
Tell us about yourself?
How weird is writing about yourself? I'm forever embarrassed whenever I have to do it haha. My name is Sarah, I’m 22, and my only true talent is claw machines.
What’s the vibe music-wise?
It’s kind of a dreamy, swirly, dark pop type moment.
What are your production and writing processes like?
I always always always start with lyrics. The words of any song are what draws me in the most, so when I first started writing songs that is what made the most sense to me. Lyrics have a tendency to come at the WORST moment in time though, most of the time it’s when I’m driving. I promise I pull over to write them down, please don’t type and drive! Safety first, even when songwriting.
The production of this track was spearheaded by Xavier Dunn, and involved a lot of me screaming ‘YES’ whenever he tested something out for the track. My favourite sample is literally a cougar growling. The man is a genius and I am an UNBIASED narrator I swear.
Can you tell us about your new single, Devil U Know?
My usual go-to music is sad dance-pop (think Robyn’s iconic Dancing On My Own), but for this one I broke my own mould and wrote a HAPPY dancy pop song! Surprised even myself.
My partner - Xavier Dunn - and I wrote it in the first few weeks of our relationship, ABOUT being in the first few weeks of a relationship. When we first sat down to start writing he was like ‘so what do you want this song to be about’ and I was like ‘HEAR ME OUT, how about, completely theoretically, not to be taken in context, POSSIBLY, we write about * winks a thousand times * wanting to be in a relationship with someone and the crazy feelings you feel in the first few weeks of new love.’ I think he got the hint.
Any tour dates coming up?
Nothing yet, but I HAVE been practising my boogie if you pick up what I’m putting down.
What does the rest of 2019 have in store for you?
The next single is all but finished, so I will definitely be setting it free before the end of this year.
Where can we find more of your music?
This is the debut! Yay for new music! You can find it on all the places you like to listen to tracks :)
