Introducing exciting young artist Gailla, and her telling first single, Crowning
Honest, emotional storytelling + energetic production make for a great release.
Gabi Brown AKA Gailla, is an artist you've likely yet to hear of. Although she hasn't even cracked the 100 mark on Facebook, in the interest of getting in early we wanted to introduce you to her and her debut single, Crowning. It's an exciting first salvo from an emerging young producer, one that tackles some heady issues drawn from her own past as a young bisexual woman in high school. It's a wonderfully, emotional piece of storytelling matched up to some energetic and exciting production, and we dig it. Check it out along with its just-released, disconcertingly awesome new video below:
Tell us about about yourself?
Hi! I'm Gabi, I'm 21, I live in Sydney and I'm in my first year of study at the Australian Institute of Music. Besides making music I love public transport, writing non-fiction, and bushwalking.
What kinda tunes we talkin’?
The genre is definitely closest to alternative pop. My songs are very lyric-based and personal, and also quietly political at times. And also bangers.
Production/writing process:
I begin writing on my piano at home to flesh out chords and melodies and lyrics, then start building up the track's production in Ableton. Since I'm still honing my mixing skills, I'll then take the song to a producer and we'll work on it together in the studio until it's done.
Can you tell us about your new single, Crowning?
Yeah! Crowning is about how I felt queerbaited when I was in my mid-teens by a girl I liked. The song's plot is mostly fictional, but every feeling behind it – anger, confusion – is exactly what I felt as I came to understand my sexuality in time and moved out of that queerbaiting experience. I wrote Crowning to send a message of support to my confused 15-year-old self and to remind myself today to be proud of who I am.
What’s the rest of the year have in store?
I'm looking to organise a Joanna Newsom tribute evening (please contact me if you're interested in playing at it!), and to release more songs, possibly an EP, whilst I study.
Where can we hear more of your music?
Crowning is the only song I have out right now - but everything over the next months will be released on Soundcloud.
