Echo Omen has been busy. Echo Omen is busy. The alias of Matthew Bracknell, since he walked us through his debut album New Moon, Ancient Eye earlier this year, the Denmark (WA) based artist has stuck with his goal of writing, recording and releasing a new song for every new moon of the year (AKA once a month).
His latest creation is the engaging sounds of Seduced By My Shadow featuring Dan Gunn, Bracknell’s former bandmate in Soulin Wild, marking their first collaboration in nearly a decade. Starting life as a guitar riff from Dan, Bracknell was inspired and began building beats and rhymes around it, the pair collaborated online with both artist’s ideas complimenting the other and resulting in a beautiful musical reconnection.
Opening with said addictive guitar riff, Seduced By My Shadow soon gives way to reverberated vocal melodies before the mellow beats kick in, leaving a perfect amount of room for Matthew’s rapidfire & conscious rhymes to push things forward while subtle sax flourishes fill out the mix. Thematically, Echo Omen’s new single explores themes of mental health, referring to the ease with which one can be seduced by the darker parts of the human psyche and how people can deal with this.
Meanwhile, the inventive & collaborative music video saw Bracknell reach out to nearly 30 different contributors, asking them to provide eight seconds of video inspired by the song’s title - without having actually heard the song. The result is a collage-style video that features some wildly coincidental synchronicities, including multiple different inclusions of owls, with a slow motion scene of an exploding guitar tying it all together.
Seduced By My Shadow comes ahead of Echo Omen’s new album Belonging, set for a February 2 2024 release. In the meantime, soak up Seduced By My Shadow as it premieres on Pilerats ahead of its November 13 release.
