Premiere: Dear Sunday - Postcode Lover

W.A. indie duo release energetic & melodic new single, sign to burgeoning local label Tone City Records

As we edge closer to the end of the year, Dear Sunday are here to bring the summer vibes early with their new ode to long distance love, Postcode Lover, out August 10 but premiering on Pilerats today.

Following up February single Venom, Postcode Lover is a soaring slice of infectious indie-pop-rock that ebbs and flows between it’s driving verses and choruses, effectively broken up with halftime mellow bridges tying everything together, while lyrically exploring the dynamics, challenges and complexities involved with a long-distance relationship.

Dear Sunday AKA Ben Swanson and Mason Nguyen explain ”This song was written in Mason's bedroom about a friend we had over. We started chatting about feelings as usual, and things came up about our friend's relationship. So what better way to express the situation than to write a song about it?

Postcode Lover is a track written about having feelings for someone while being separated by distance but then realising how that distance can be one of the reasons why you were drawn in the first place. The idea of "wanting what you can't have" or "not realising what you had until it's gone" was a huge influence when writing the record. Often, we've found ourselves in situations where we feel comfortable with how things are, even if they aren't ideal. This song highlights the struggle of pushing to improve the situation, whether to make it work or realise that it's not working.

Our friends were all a big focus in this track. For the second half of the second verse, we used song names from our friend's bands. We recorded this track at Tone City Records studio and didn't have a few of the parts written yet. While we had some downtime, we were just spit-balling the idea of using our friend's band track names, and somehow it all came together with a verse that made sense and fit the idea of the track."

Alongside their dynamic new single, Dear Sunday have signed with Tone City Records, joining a deep and diverse roster that includes the likes of Dice, Benjamin Witt, Nectar, Supathick and Siobhan Cotchin. Tone City Records director Sam Ford says “We are super excited to bring Dear Sunday into the Tone City Records Family! Having worked with the boys over a number of new tracks and spending some quality time together on a recent national tour, Dear Sunday will be an awesome addition to our label. We have the highest of hopes for the boys and can’t wait to see them continue to grow and develop with our team.”

Postcode Lover comes ahead of a three date East Coast tour for the guys, before coming home for a headline show at Mojos on September 9 - see below for all dates, and give Dear Sunday’s new single a spin a day ahead of release!
