Premiere: Meet Jaguar Jonze and her ripping debut single, You Got Left Behind

A Brisbane-based creative making some sweeping sounds straight outta the wild west.

Brissy-based artist Jaguar Jonze comes fully arrived with her exciting debut single, You Got Left Behind - a wonderful blend of soaring sounds that could have come straight out of the wild west. And even though she hasn't played a live show yet, Jaguar Jonze has already been invited to perform at Music Matters Festival in Singapore and the International Indie Music Festival in Indonesia later this year.

Just after them though, she'll be launching her debut on home turf at The Foundry on September 14, and along with premiering the single we got to know her a little better, below:

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a serial hobbyist. I love songwriting, I love performing, I love drawing, I love eating, I love travelling, I love learning, I love trying everything once, I love working on and riding shitty old motorbikes that probably should’ve already been smelted into kettles already.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Storytelling with a soundtrack of gunslinging guitar lines in outer space. Think Portishead meets Last Shadow Puppets.

Production/writing process:

Normally, I write them in my little music room at home and then I’ll lay down the guitar and vocals separately. Strip the guitar out and send the vocals to my band so that they’re not influenced by my own rhythm. I’ll either keep building ideas at home or jam it out with my guitarist Joe or the band. Some of these songs I’ve been working on have existed in six different versions. I can be pretty stubborn about making a song work just right.

Can you tell us about your new single, You Got Left Behind?

It’s a song about watching old friends spiral into their own depths and clinging onto their blissfully ignorant youth. No matter how much you extend yourself to help them move forward with you, in the end it’s a hard thought to realise that it is up to them to make that change. At some point all you can do is step back, call and wait instead of continuously wading in the toxicity alongside them. It’s about how hard it is to decide when to make that call and the pain to then just watch.

Any shows coming up?

I’m headed to Music Matters to showcase in Singapore and International Indie Music Festival in Indonesia but really I’m excited to do a single release in my hometown Brisbane at The Foundry on the 14th of September.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

After coming back from tour I’ll be releasing another single and another music video. I’m so excited to see these come together as I had the most amazing time filming and recording them.

Where can we hear more of your music?

This is the debut single but keep your eyes peeled, there’s more coming. Find You Got Left Behind everywhere – Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, la la la.
