Introducing - Aborted Tortoise

One of the many rad artists playing this year's Hidden Treasures in Fremantle.

Presented by the City of Fremantle, Hidden Treasures is now in its fourth year of creating unique collaborations and dialogues between musicians and music lovers, softening the barriers between performers and audiences in some of Fremantle's coolest spaces. This year sees four venues in Fremantle’s West End playing host to Hidden Treasures every Thursday in July, including Fremantle Workers Club, The Navy Club, The Buffalo Club and new addition - the PS Art Space. One $10 ticket will grant a night’s membership to all four venues, which will host staggered performances so that music lovers can wander from one music hot spot to the next. You can read up more on what nights are on offer by heading to the Hidden Treasures FACEBOOK, but before you do, get to know one of the acts playing who also happen to have the most amazing band name ever - Aborted Tortoise.

Tell us about yourselves?

We’re a five piece surf/punk band from Perth formed in early 2013.

What kind tunes we talkin?

I guess the easiest way to describe us is “surf punk”.  It's pretty fast and real simple, we take a lot of inspiration from '70s punk mainly, stuff like The Ramones, The Saints, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and The Stooges but also with a pretty significant garage/surfy sorta vibe courtesy of The Mummies, Dick Dale, The Ventures and The Sonics. Loud and simple is how we do it.

Production/writing process?

Well we all try to write songs and bring them to jams. We do often just come up with a stupid song title and write the song around the title, that’s what happened with Chicks Dig Scabs and I Killed My Girlfriend. But we all approach songwriting differently.

What do you do outside of Aborted Tortoise?

Bum around. Nah, Charles works at JB Hi Fi, John works and goes to TAFE and the rest of us are at uni and do some part time work. Other than that we just watch shit movies and play GTA V haha.

Any shows coming up?

Yeah we play heaps, probably too much actually. We’re playing at The Navy Club for Hidden Treasures on July 3.

And releases?

As for releases we are going to be releasing our debut EEP pretty soon on vinyl. It’ll be packed to the brim with our hit singles so keep an eye out for that. We just need to get our shit together and print it.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

Other than the EP release hopefully some shows outside of Perth and writing some more songs and probably recording them too. And obviously playing shows every weekend with the usual buddies, which is always good.

Where can we hear more of your music?

We’ve got our first demo on our BANDCAMP for free so go download the shit out of that. Also we’ve got a bunch of tracks on our SOUNDCLOUD and some on Youtube so hit those up too, and the old FACEBOOK.
