Premiere: Meet Elwyn, who shares the clip for Never Gonna Bring Me Down

Premiere: Meet Elwyn, who shares the clip for Never Gonna Bring Me Down

The brilliant single is her first for 2019, and places the Perth musician as someone you should be watching.

We've spoken a lot about the rising talent within West Australia across the last twelve months, with new faces seemingly popping up left, right and centre in every pocket covered by the state's genre-bending, community-built music scene. No different is Elwyn, a rising musician originally from the state's south who after sharing a handful of tracks a few weeks back - they're collated on her debut EP, the five-track Higher Ground in 2017 - marked her big return to the spotlight back in September, with Never Gonna Bring Me Down.

It's a sensational starting point for the Perth-via-Albany musician if you're yet to be acquainted, mixing a multitude of genres together into once, concise song that feels full of that distinct Elwyn charm - bright and lush, with her soulful vocal taking the centre spotlight. As you might be able to tell from the single's title, "Never Gonna Bring Me Down is about self-redemption, overcoming sadness, and loving one’s life," says Elwyn on the track, and you can hear that in the empowering touch the single brings; her vocal full of cathartic, letting-go energy as she soars above bass riffs and saxophone solos.

Today, however, we're premiering the single's official video clip, which takes the single's sun-soaked saxophone to California as she brings the single's theme to life. It doubles down on the track's messages of empowerment and overcoming obstacles, something that many - Elwyn included - have to face when heading off to the Californian coastline in search of something bigger than what they can get in Australia.

Dive into the clip below, and while you're at it, introduce yourself to Elwyn, who is a name that should soon be on everyone's radars.

Tell us about yourself?

Heya! I’m from Perth/Albany, Western Australia. I’m obsessed with all animals, especially doggo’s (I don’t trust anyone who isn’t). I never grew out of the phase of dancing by myself in my room and instead of yelling at people I write songs about them.

What’s the vibe music-wise?

It’s been described as Soul, Pop, Funk, 70s Disco, Psychedelia which are all genres that I’m hugely into. I love powerful vocals with a funky, rhythmic hook, deep tone and a large range.

What are your production and writing processes like?

I usually come up with a melody first, chords second and lyrics third. I then workshop different lyrics and melodies until I’m happy with the final tune. I then teach the song to my band and we work out the best feel rhythm wise. Then we demo up the song and take it into a recording studio with a recording engineer/producer.

Can you tell us about your new single, Never Gonna Bring Me Down, and it’s official video clip?

Never Gonna Bring Me Down is about self-redemption, overcoming sadness, and loving one’s life.

The film is set in coastal California, shot on colourful super 8 film, highlighting the iconic nostalgia of the area. A place known in popular culture as a haven for soul searchers and vagabonds - the film follows Elwyn, a lone desert drifter as she explores the wonders of the coast, and does some soul-searching along the way.

What does the rest of 2019 – and beyond - have in store for you?
