10/10 Would Listen: COLT
Dip into the finest of wavy raps courtesy of mid-week club night COLT.
If you stumble "down the alleyway beside Cheek, next to OPSM and the kebab shop" on a Wednesday in Subiaco, Perth, you're likely (well, guaranteed) to chance upon COLT, the latest club offering from the scandalous minds at Metric Events (Cheek, Father, Akuna Club).
COLT is a friendly midweek dip where everybody knows your name - even if they've forgotten it by the night's end. Each week you can breakthrough the doors for a fiver before 10, indulge in free dirty bird (KFC) and even dirtier raps, drink for cheap or dice shoot your way to a few on COLT (double dice roll = free entry). Leave your swag at the door and be open to explore - Toronto rap, trap house, classic Queens - if it's a rhyme or a beat that's weird and wavy, you'll be able to trip out to it at COLT. Next week the boys are brewing up birthday celebrations for Andre 3000 - given the Outkast rapper has never spit a whack verse in his life, you can guarantee there's going to be plenty of gold on offer. Keep on the COLT Facebook page for details.
COLT crew leaders Jesse di Fabio and Jackson Spoke have been kind enough to select for us ten tracks that represent the vibe they're COLT-ivating down that laneway. Listen in!
MARVEL ALEXANDER - DIRTY THOUGHTS (PROD.BY SANGO)
Marvel Alexander is someone to keep an eye on this year. This track is one of his best and the flow of his verses is super raw. It has a dirty, organic, clanky beat too it as well, which is COLT’s sound in a nutshell.
GOLDYARD - BEAUTIFUL STRINGS
New dudes on the block Goldyard show their talent on this track, amazing beat to go with very smooth rhymes. All around classic rap track.
Post Malone has come in real hot so far this year and this track is a testament to exactly that. White Iverson is nothing less than a rap anthem for 2015.
TORY LANEZ - IN FOR IT (PROD. BY RL GRIME)
Tory Lanez this year has already put out some real melodic amazing stuff with vocals all over the map, and (in for it) definitely takes the cake. With RL Grime on the beat this 120bpm smooth but industrial type track is structured perfectly and straight power.
DANNY SETH - NEVER FORGET FEAT. JIMMY JOHNSON
London-based rapper Danny Seth comes thru on this reverb/synth heavy track with the help of rising Toronto crooner Jimmy Johnson. Bit of a slower-paced tune, but nevertheless screams the COLT vibe.
FLATBUSH ZOMBiES – DON'T DO DRUGS
Flatbush are a huge personal favourite act of mine - there's three members: Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliot, they come out of Brooklyn and are a part of the East Coast movement "Beast Coast" (along with the likes of Joey Bada$$ and the Underachievers). I feel this track is great example of their addictive style.
DENZEL CURRY - ENVY ME
Denzel Curry is a 19 year-old from Florida, who is currently gaining heaps of attention. He has a double EP, 32 Zel and Planet of the Shrooms, coming out early June. This track is the second single off 32 Zel, and is a great example of the talent he possesses.
KEY! – WORK YA WRIST (PROD. BY TM88)
Key! is one of the many talented rappers coming out of Atlanta, and has been doing collabs with other Atlanta artists such as Father and ILoveMakonnen - this guy is one to keep your eye on. Work Ya Wrist is catchy AF and a perfect turn-up track for COLT.
LEATHER CORDUROYS – HAVE U EVA? FT. VIC MENSA (PROD IKAZ BOI & MYTH SYZER)
This song was released earlier this month and I've had it on repeat since first hearing it. Leather Corduroys x Vic Mensa x Ikaz Boi x Myth Syzer...this song was guaranteed to be a success! The beat has that thuggish, aggressive feel to it, and the lyrics and flow top it off perfectly.
PARTYNEXTDOOR – DONT WORRY (FEAT. CA$HOUT)
Partynextdoor is a Toronto R&B/hip-hop artist who is signed to OVO Sound. His laidback style is dope AF, and super catchy. This song with Ca$hout is another personal favorite of mine - lyrics, flow and beat all work perfectly together.
COLT goes down every Wednesday at 83 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, from 9pm - late. $5 on door 9pm - 10pm, $15 after.
