Premiere: Emma Russack tackles our social media obsession on new single, Body Goals

It's from her forthcoming LP, Permanent Vacation, due August 25.

August 25 will see the release of Emma Russack's fourth album, Permanent Vacation, an album born from a local of guilt about not having a real job: "I had some well-paying gigs last year, which meant that for three months I was literally just going to the beach, reading and lying in my parents' hammock - without feeling guilty." It was during this period Russack found herself in good enough place to write the majority of Permanent Vacation, with the songs coming "out of contentment and reflection - as opposed to some kind of exisistential crisis or breakup."

And we're very excited to premiere one of the results of that content/reflective period, Body Goals, a track that pulls no punches in discussing our obsession with celebrity, social media, and dieting, with lyrics like, "I want Kendall’s swimsuit / Get me on a super yacht / Have you heard of Djarum Black / I smoke them because I look hot / My soul can rot." We asked her a little more on it, and Russack, much like the track, wasn't witholding in her response: "I wrote the song about social media and celebrity culture. I think it's awful - but I'm also addicted to it. And then there's this whole #fitspo #rawfood #vegan thing happening on Instagram which I find utterly abhorrent. It's a mad world! I think that's what I'm trying to tap into."

The track comes with a new video clip, one that on its own might seem salacious, but with the single overlaid becomes almost haunting in its depiction of our phone obsession. Check it out below, and mark August 25 in your diary for what's shaping up to be a great album in Permanent Vacation.
