Premiere: DEM MOB - 'DIP'

Hailing from the heart of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, emerging hip hop trio drop a hard hitting new single alongside a storytelling music video - take a first watch

Coming in hot with a new one-two combo of single and music video are DEM MOB, a hip hop ensemble rising from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in far north western South Australia, with their new one DIP, premiering a day ahead of release on Pilerats.

Opening with majestic string plucks, DIP soon gives way to hard hitting trappy drums, atmospheric swirling flute samples and DEM MOB’s in your face vocal harmonies before the bars commence. Featuring some tongue-twisting, rapid-fire rhymes, DIP sees DEM MOB offer us a stark and confronting insight into the realities faced by black Australians each and every day.

An anthem of survival, DEM MOB’s Elisha Umuhuri explains “The sensation of being labelled as criminals simply because of our skin colour is an everyday reality for us. Talk of equality and promises to treat Aboriginal people better are prevalent, yet we find ourselves judged as suspects unless we conform to certain expectations.”

Capturing these themes visually, the music video for DIP (directed by Natasha Wanganeen) was filmed across emblematic locations such as the Brick Works Car Park and O’sullivans Beach Friendly Grocer and portrays the struggles of being a young black fella in cinematic fashion, interspersed with footage of DEM MOB performing at a dope outdoor party.

DIP comes off the back of a massive 2023 for the group that saw them drop their single Soul Of The Lion, play Spain's iconic Primavera Sound, and also scoop five awards at the 2023 SA Music Awards.

Take a DIP a day ahead of release:
