Premiere: Butterfingers make their triumphant return with Big Night Out

Confession time: I've only ever stolen one thing in my life and that was a Butterfingers CD from Sanity when I was like 19. I was just scrolling through some CDs and found their debut album, cracked open the case to check out the booklet and to my surprise the CD was still in the case (normally they were filed out at the back). Anyway I took that as a sign that I should steal this CD, so I calmly walked off and never turned back, listening to the shit out of Breakfast At Fatboys, featuring such bangers as Yo Mama, Everytime and Piss On Ya. I really thrashed that CD in my car, my theft at the time in many ways pre-dating the pirate life we all live now.

But yeah, I guess if you're reading this Butterfingers - I'm really sorry I stole your CD. But 1) I blame Sanity for leaving the CD in the case, and 2) I. Fucking. Loved. That. Album. I didn't just pick a few singles off iTunes or whatever, or put a couple of faves into a Spotify playlist. No, I listened to it start to finish, hundreds, maybe thousands, of times, on my shitty car stereo as I drove literal hours to and from my early years of University. But yeah, consider this an apology, and I hope some glowing words below about your ripping new single will help soften the blow of me being a shit cunt all those years ago.

Big Night Out is the - somewhat surprising - return of working class legends Butterfingers, who stole the hearts of the nation with their loveable and incredibly relatable tales of Australian suburbia back in the mid-2000s. In many ways, the Australian music landscape has left that Ozzie Hip Hop vibe behind, preferring instead the new wave of rap, influenced heavily by US counterparts. But Big Night Out, whilst throwing back to the Butterfingers sound of yesteryear, doesn't feel stale - rather it feels fresh. It's live, there's no autotune, it flows so damn smoothly, Evil Eddie is on fire and the whole thing just works. Maybe it's the song's source - detailing the horrific yet true events that lead to the abovementioned Evil Edie hidden and physically trapped in a back alley with a broken spine - that give it that extra punch.

It feels like Butterfingers are back and have got some things to say, and I cannot wait to hear what. Big Night Out is officially released this Friday, and you can catch 'em live on a short-n-sweet east coast tour (check the dates down the bottom):
