Get to know Camarano and his warm, comforting new single, Mortal Man

The Perth musician's debut EP is out now, and will be officially launched at Fremantle's The Odd Fellow on April 21.

I've lost count of how many times Perth electronic musicians have completely blown me away with their washed-out dreamscapes, but it's happening more and more often - and I'm bloody stoked. Following on from the likes of WULFE and Sundal, Camarano is another artist who you'll instantly fall in love with on your first listen, winning us over with his latest single Mortal ManMortal Man is a masterclass at creating beauty from incredible songwriting, channelling a more electronic-tinged Bon Iver with a really warm and dynamic production that gently floats underneath his own crooning vocal.

It's an absolute stunner of a listen, and a sure highlight of his just-released new EP Somebody Else, which will be launched at Fremantle's The Odd Fellow on April 21 with special guests Chip Hazard and Bri Clark. Check out the full EP below, and get to know the musician a little better ahead of his EP launch at the end of the month – full poster at the end of this article.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m Mat Cammarano; songwriter-producer, recovering choc addict and canine enthusiast. I’ve been playing in and recording bands since my teens. I finally grew a pair and started putting out my solo material late last year.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

A real dogs breakfast that goes from dreamy to psychedelic to electronic.

Production/writing process:

The process is different for every song. Sometimes it’s a turn of phrase, synth patch, drum groove, TV show etc. When it comes you know and then you have to follow it. Some songs are a gift from the universe and fall out (these are usually the best ones), some take months of sweat and brain power, some never see the light of day.

Can you tell us about your new EP, Somebody Else?

The EP explores the themes of family, mortality and social anxiety. Half of it was produced at home and half at Debaser Studios with Andy Lawson. Every song tells a truth borrowed from a combo of real life, stories and imagination.

Any shows coming up?

Yeee! We’ve got the big one coming up on the 21st of April at The Odd Fellow with pals Bri Clark and CHIP HAZARD. I’m excited as heck to play with my band for the first time.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

A handful of kewl shows and making a shit-tonne of music. Fingers crossed I get my DCA grant over the line!

Where can we hear more of your music?

All the places (Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud) and sometimes even Woolies.
