Back with their first new music since 2022 is Melbourne’s Zombeaches, coming in hot with the layered and emotional post-punk sounds of A Taste of Oxygen, with its music video premiering on Pilerats today.
Packed with angular guitars and a driving rhythm section, A Taste of Oxygen sees frontman James Young channelling a bit of The Birthday Party era Nick Cave with his unbridled delivery, before things take a more mellow and melodic turn at the choruses.
Written during lockdown in his hometown in the Mornington Peninsula as he longed for the city, Young explains “The lyrics deal with the idea of searching for something but with no real strong idea of what that is, it was written in lock down so I was craving that sense of connection and social interaction. I live in a very small coastal town so I had not seen or interacted with many people for a long time.”
The music video for A Taste of Oxygen also channels these themes, featuring James making his way around the grimy Melbourne streets, with the video filmed by Oscar O’Shae (who has worked with These New South Whales and CLAMM in the past).
On the video, Young explains “I met Oscar at the John Curtin Hotel and over a pint we discussed the plan for the shoot, We were limited to time in order to get the right sunlight so moved pretty quick which was great cause I didn't really have time to think about anything we just went for it. Oscar filmed some shots of me moving around the CBD of Melbourne and we finished up in the empty car park as the sun was setting. It was all filmed with one hand held camera and done with in 2 hours. It was a blast, and I was surprised at how comfortable Oscar made it to be able to perform in public with no music or anything. Just me dancing around by myself like a fool.”
