Premiere: Kirklandd drops a one-take video for latest track, Impulse

The Canberra hip-hop rising star shares the clip ahead of a launch show on March 23rd.

We're finding ourselves shouting out the blossoming Australian hip-hop scene more and more lately, with a never-ending stream of exciting talent and newcoming names suggesting that the scene is perhaps the healthiest it's ever been, following the international dominance of particularly US rappers around the world. Kirklandd is the latest name to pop up, and although the Canberra name has been around for a minute (his first track, the Genesis Owusu-featuring We On, dropped over three years ago now), he's making a new push with his latest track Impulse, which really showcases two years of growth and refinement the musician has made since his last track.

Featuring Melbourne musician Zellow joining him on vocals, Impulse is a decadently smooth track that marries his signature, 90s-inspired hip-hop/R&B groove with something a little more electronic, moving between moments more soulful and down-tempo and those more quick-paced and obviously hip-hop-focused, offering a sense of versatility and diversity within the single's three-minute duration. Lyrically, the single explores returning to an old love, with Kirklandd admitting that Impulse talks about "Going back to this previous connection always feels like it could lead to something more… like things could somehow be the way they used to be. But ultimately it’s never more than acting on impulse."

Today, we premiere the single's official video clip, which unites the track's soulful hip-hop groove with simplistic but effective visuals that showcase the single's fiery vibe with choreography and colour, shot in one take in Canberra by Nic Vevers. "I wanted to create a visual world around the experience the song explores, conveying the emotion of the track vividly through the colours in the clip and the speed at which they’re executed," Kirklandd says on the clip. "It was crucial we nailed it in one take, so you feel the immediacy of acting on your impulse and the emotions felt after doing so." Watch it below:
