Premiere: Meet Gamirez and his moody video for Guarantee

The video arrives ahead of a big year ahead for the promising, Brisbane-via-Perth rapper.

When it comes to hip-hop, Australia is truly on another wave right now, going from strength to strength with every release. It’s a scene quickly becoming one of the world’s most diverse and versatile scenes — with an endless stream of newcomers in every wave offering something new, exciting, and perhaps never been heard before.

Brisbane-via-Perth rapper Gamirez is an act definitely among this growing collection rappers pushing the scene forward into new directions. In his rhymes, he incorporates lyrics and themes from his upbringing — born in Uganda to South Sudanese parents – mixing this with an in-your-face, abrash energy that’s almost unmatched in Australian rap music. His latest single, Guarantee, is an example of this, with long-time friend and collaborator Figuero Jones whipping together a dark and twisted production for Gamirez to flow over the top of, with lyrics on breaking out, working hard and keeping motivation levels sky high adding to the single’s dark, yet somewhat uplifting feeling. "It’s an uplifting song to motivate myself to keep my head up and work towards securing the future I want, dreaming beyond the dead-end job I’m currently working," he says on the single. "I came from a place where life is not promised, I've always strived to achieve more than the average person and this song is a reflection of where I am and where I aspire to be."

Today, we premiere the single's official video clip, matching its dark, moody feeling with flashing visuals, highlight Gamirez' rap abilities as he rhymes and moves around in front of darkly-lit surroundings. Watch the clip below, and better get to know Gamirez underneath that:

Tell us about yourself?

Hey, what's up my name is Gamirez, I am a Brisbane via Perth Rapper/Producer. I was born in Uganda to South Sudanese parents and raised in the Beautiful suburb of Mirrabooka in North Perth before relocating to Brisbane in late 2017.

What’s the vibe music-wise?

High-energy contemporary Hip Hop. It’s gotta be fast, bouncy with heavy 808’s and closed high hats that snap. I’ve always been inspired by that Southern Atlanta and New Orleans bounce, from Big Boi, Lil Wayne to Young Thug and Future. No matter the subject matter/theme of the song, it has to be fast enough to dance to.

What are your production and writing processes like?

I have a very unorthodox production and writing process; I have over 2,000 notes on my phone and laptop. Every time a melody or an idea pops up I put it on my notes, to the average eye, it looks like a very unorganised file but they’re my brainstorming sessions. When I make or find a beat I just go to the studio and freestyle the whole song based on the mood I’m in and the random ideas I dotted on my phone, somehow it always works for me.

Can you tell us about your latest single, Guarantee?

Guarantee is about the hustle, grind and search for generational wealth, coming from the background I came from nothing was ever promised. Nothing was given to me. I started the race when everyone was already on their 10th lap. I feel like I’ve somewhat caught up but I’m still not satisfied, I want to work towards a future where I can provide for my family and the family after like Jay Z despite facing adversity early on.

Any tour dates coming up?

I don’t have a tour to announce right at this moment but my team is working hard to put something together in the near future. I want to see this beautiful country and share this great energy with everyone in every state.

What does 2019 have in store for you?

2019 is a huge year, in 2018 I released three singles but this year the people will finally get a project. I’ve been working on so much new stuff and I can’t wait for it to come out.

Where can we find more of your music?
