Premiere: Meet Sudanese rapper Gabreal, who just dropped an epic new video

The Sydney-based MC's latest single gets an intense, cinematic visual.

Born in South Sudan and now based in Sydney, rapper Gabreal has arrived at a very telling time in Australia, here to tell his story as a child of war, having lived in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda and now Australia. Having already gained a healthy following around Sydney thanks to a raw and honest brand of rap over the past few years, new single On The Beat True Story now finds the MC digging back into that history with his music: "I didn’t think people were ready to hear this type of music but this is my story and it was time for me to let people know who I am."

The track also comes with an ominous (to put it lightly) video clip courtesy of PJ Svododa, which you can check out below along with a learn a little more about Gabreal ahead of the release of his new EP, due later next month.

Production/writing process:

My producer Lowgrind does all my production, we made most of songs at his home studio in Marrickville. A lot late nights and early mornings he cook the beats and I write few bars or chords right on the spot. We have this energy once the energy is there the song come out better and lit. We worked as team he there making the beat I’m in the cut writing to the beat. Writing process I write everyday most of my songs are written in weird place, I a wrote few of the songs on this project in hotel rooms - I was touring while working on it. My normal writing is usually in my house, train station, club, at party... Anyway the ideas come off at me.

Can you tell us about your new single, and its awesome video clip?

On The Beat True Story came about one day we were just making music as usual and Lowgrind played me the beat. I was like this beat is special, I took it home and start writing to it. Came back to studio next morning and recored the demo, I named the song On The Beat True Story because everything I’m saying on it is true. Being born in war life was tough and rough I seen it all and this song is the first song I ever got personal. Some of those lyrics on it got me shedding a tear. Writing it was brainstorming digging for the stories... I was living through them, but wasn’t open to 'em. It was so hard to talk about about personal things, I didn’t think people were ready to hear this type of music but this is my story and it was time for me to let people know who I am. The video was shot at La Perouse and Malabar, Norton St Leichhardt, was so fun shooting it.

Any shows coming up.
