“Neck-snapping linguistic battles untangled at every opportunity by the experimental jazz jam contingent. It's a merging that recalls the freedom of The Roots 'Illadelph Halflife' era soul/rap.”
- Rolling Stone
By now, the breezy port of Fremantle, WA has a reputation for birthing some of the world's best alternative music. Enter Koi Child, the combined forces of local hip hop party starters Childs Play and nu-jazz quartet Kashikoi, the brains behind the smooth as silk debut single Slow One and riotous new offering Black Panda, both of which are produced by Kevin Parker (Tame Impala). Since the single dropped in April (check our premiere, exclusive BTS photos and interview HERE), Black Panda has been played on BBC Radio 6, triple j, double j, and community radio across Australia.
The 7-piece have already had a seriously busy first year of formation. Their very first show went down well enough to catch the ear of one nearby Parker, landing them a support with Tame Impala at Rottnest Island for Koi Child’s second gig, and it's been a rapid march since then: Capacity local shows, a coveted spot on the Groovin the Moo in WA, and support slots around the country with Tame Impala and The Preatures followed.
In 2016 things are set to go crazy, with a new single (below), their debut self-titled album on the way and a huge national tour to support it. Watch this space.
