Vera Blue switches things up with her new single, Private

Private is the first single from her forthcoming debut album, and comes with a whole heap of Australian tour dates.

Vera Blue is someone I’ve always slept on, unfortunately. The Australian vocalist and writer charmed with her debut EP Fingertips last year, which ended up becoming one of the year’s best with tracks including Hold and Settle. She’s since become one of Australia’s most in-demand vocalists, teaming up with Illy, Flume and Slumberjack for singles and live shows towards the end of 2016, setting her up perfectly for the release of her debut full-length in 2017. Private is the first single from the debut record, and it marks a massive change in direction for the vocalist in the year ahead. Whereas her dark, brooding feel in singles such as Hold really captivated people, her newfound access to producers such as those mentioned above have allowed her to experiment and switch things up a little, something evidently displayed on Private. Vera Blue’s vocals still packs that pitch-perfect punch though, effortlessly gliding above the single’s more electronic-leaning production, but, to be honest here, I’m not sure if I’m sold yet.

Like I mentioned just before, the vocals really deliver, but the accompanying production is such a switch-up from her previous work that I’m not sure if it’s effective this early on. It doesn’t really sit right with Vera Blue’s naturally brooding tone in her vocals, as much as she tries to distance herself from this on Private. It’s a great song though, it’ll just be interesting to see what direction she’ll head in for the rest of the album, which is set to arrive later in the year. She’s also got a whole heap of Australian tour dates just announced, if that tickles your fancy. Check them out below.
