Even if their only release since 2015 was a charity Christmas cover at the tail-end of last year, Hiatus Kaiyote have continued to leave a lasting legacy as one of Australia's pinnacle acts. Their members are dotted amongst projects spanning internationally, whether it be through full solo projects - like that of Nai Palm - or their contribution to some of the biggest hip-hop records of the last decade; Beyoncé and Jay Z sampling a track on their EVERYTHING IS LOVE record, while others including Drake, Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar and Chance The Rapper have worked with the band in various forms, whether it be collaboratively-speaking or simply through sampling.

Nevertheless, the band themselves haven't actually released anything major since their 2015 record Choose Your Weapon - a six-year drought that ends today with the release of their new single Get Sun. The track is the first taste of their forthcoming new album Mood Valiant, which with its release on June 25th via Brainfeeder/Ninja Tune, will herald the return of one of Australia's defining groups and what they've been up to over the last six years; a story that will be shown amongst the foundations of Mood Valiant, and Hiatus Kaiyote's ever-brilliant and enchanting songwriting.

According to the press release announcing the record, much of Mood Valiant's instrumental was written while touring Choose Your Weapon, etched out amongst dates across the world in the years following the album's release. Then, as Nai Palm prepared her vocals for the record, she was diagnosed with breast cancer; a life-altering moment in itself, made even worse by Nai's family history with breast cancer. Then came the recovery, and while some of the album was written before and amongst this time, it altered the course of the album's foundation and meanings - as you could maybe expect.

"When you think your life is going to be taken away from you, it makes you think about who you are," she says on the experience. "I guess after the breast cancer scare I decided that I needed to prove to life that the offering I have is genuine. My only wish is to live and offer my experience of time and beauty."

It's something that shows on their returning single Get Sun, a reflective five-minutes-30 that sees Hiatus Kaiyote return to their mind-altering spirit, if not one that's continued to evolve and grow throughout the last six years. Built in collaboration with infamous Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai, Get Sun swells with its multi-faceted instrumentation, which navigates musical peaks and valleys amongst Nai's warm vocal, which with her experiences between records, ache with a combination of solemness and beauty.

As mentioned, it's the first taste of their forthcoming record Mood Valiant this June, which is also announced today alongside their forthcoming album tour dates. It's a long-awaited return to the live stage for Hiatus Kaiyote, spanning from an album launch in Melbourne this July, right through to the bulk of the dates in October. There's also a couple of solo Nai Palm shows coming up, and a few festivals - including Bluesfest - in the pipeline.
