Video Premiere: Claudie Joy - To Be a Horse (Live)

Check out the gorgeous live video shot on super 8 in the hills of Boorloo for local folk artist’s forthcoming single

Bubbling up through the Boorloo scene for a few years now has been Claudie Joy (often with band The Joy Boys in tow) that have seen them nominated for a WAM award for most popular new act, supporting Spacey Jane at Redhill Auditorium as well as having debut single Honey land in RTRFM’s top 20 played songs of 2020.

Ready to build on this momentum, Joy will return in 2023 with a new EP and live shows all around W.A., and today gives us the first taste of what to expect, with a special live version and gorgeous video of new single To Be a Horse. A collaborative effort with local photographer Zev Weinstein, creator Maile Bowen and graphic designer Genevieve Brummage, the crew set out for the gorgeous hills of Perth to capture a beautiful, honest and raw musical moment.

Claudie explains ”We set out to make something raw and honest. Packed the car with unreliable cameras, tape, an excitable pup, and stumbled upon the perfect spot quite by accident. I wrote “to be a horse” whilst feeling an intense ache to be anything but myself, part of the ebb and flow of a messy head. Writing the song actually helped me move past the feeling.

Maile, Zev and I shot the film on super 8 and recorded the tune to tape, all on site and all in the pursuit of capturing something intimate and simple, though it seems working in this medium is anything but! We then brought the mayhem of scattered footage and warbled tape to Gen, who stitched it together into something a little more palpable with her beautifully animated linework, turning this video into a real collaboration of Perth/Boorloo based creatives.”

Give this stunning live version of To Be a Horse a watch today as it premieres on Pilerats, and watch this space for further details of Joy’s forthcoming EP.
