Almost a year on from the release of their Hunting God Tapes. Vol 1: Violence EP, Pincer+ are back with the sequel, Hunting God Tapes. Vol 2: Romance. Welcoming us to the band’s next chapter, the six tracks that make up Vol.2 were produced, written and recorded by guitarist and songwriter Josh Ang, with drum and vocals recorded at Perth's Sumo Sound Studios (Shangrila, Voyager) and mix and mastering by George Lever of G1 Productions (Loathe, Thornhill, Pridelands).
Packed with big, distorted streaming guitars, live drums, pummelling basslines and potent vocals, Vol.2 picks up where Vol.1 left off, welcoming listeners back into Pincer+’s wild sonic world. After just forming last year, alongside their two EPs, Pincer+ have also made a name for themselves on the live front, sharing stages with the likes of Kublai Khan (US), Stray From The Path (US), Like Moths To Flames (US), Justice For The Damned, Void Of Vision, In Hearts Wake and more.
To celebrate the release of Hunting God Tapes. Vol 2: Romance, we checked in with Josh Ang to get his top five Perth acts of the moment.
Stonehands
Stonehands is Perth's finest alt rock project. They’re melancholy, agonisingly moody and carry their sound with just the right amount of nuance and restraint. I am very excited to hear what new things they make soon.
End It All
Insane. I don’t know why more people haven't gotten on the EIA hype train. Peter is a phenomenal vocalist and every instrumentalist in that band is insane. Their violent live performances are top notch too.
Oshua
Something about Osh man. I don’t think he’s missed yet. Pair him with those insane visuals C4leb400 has done and you got a perfect underground duo that's about to hit the mainstream.
X4nder
No top 5 list out of Perth is complete without Xander. One of the standout artists on a new label called Mansion Recordings, I’m a firm believer he’s right on the brink of the spotlight. Sonically, he hits that moody alt rap sound perfectly. Personally, I’ve seen this man work in the studio and his natural inclination to being a poet is crazy. Impressive both on and off stage.
Kasper
Perth is small. As a visual creative, you’ll tend to meet all the creatives just due to how tight knit our community is. I’ve had the pleasure of working with almost every artist on this list to at least some extent. I’m surrounded on a daily basis by my friends who are creatives of the same caliber as me, and it keeps me engaged and in love with creating in such an unforgiving industry.
Kasper is one of those artists. Not just a singer, but a musician who creates a lot of his instrumentation by himself. He has a nuanced sound similar to a lot of artists in the KRNB scene, but has such a unique approach to creating, setting himself apart and establishing his own lane.
