Documentary Premiere: The Making of Sprinter's Debut Album - 'Sprinter'
With their self-titled debut album out tomorrow, take a peek behind the curtain at the DIY creative process Sprinter undertook with a fun, lighthearted documentary
Following a string of singles released over 2023, Boorloo/Perth psych-rock four-piece Sprinter have readied their debut self-titled album, out November 17. With Jon Stapleton, Madison Hanley, Gus McKenzie and Lachie Hanley bonding over a wide range of influences with a focus on the fuzzier side of psychedelic sounds, the band formed just last year and have wasted no time writing and recording a stack of original songs. Sprinter have also been a regular fixture on lineups around town honing their live show and having shared stages with the likes of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Los Bitchos, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Royel Otis and many more.
The creation of the album Sprinter saw the band on recording, producing and mixing duties, with the record tracked in the iconic four5nine bar. During the creation of the record, the band tapped local go-to photographer Mitch Love to create a documentary tracing most of the album’s creation. The result is a lighthearted 15 minutes that offers an insight into the DIY process of recording an album, with gear talk balanced with plenty of humour and rounding out with a raucous live performance.
Speaking on the documentary, frontman Jon Stapleton explains "Sprinter is our debut album - a DIY effort made up of tunes we've honed over the last year in our live sets. We worked with our mate Mitch Love to craft a documentary that follows the process of this album from the beginning to (almost) the end.
We recorded the foundations of all the songs live, down at four5nine Bar in North Perth and Mitch sat in on a bunch of these sessions. He captured the recording/song-building process and all that which comes with it! The film also includes footage from overdub and mixing sessions over our home studios (bedrooms), as well as moments from our headline shows during the album process.
Don't be fooled though - it's far from a serious watch! Haha."
To celebrate the release of Sprinter, the band are throwing a mini-festival a few metres from where the album was recorded, with Jogger Fest hitting Rosemount Hotel on December 2. Alongside Sprinter, the likes of Late 90s, Homebrand, King Blue, The Psychotic Reactions and Solar Juice will all be laying down sets, with the fest also featuring pop-up market stalls and more.,
